The Hotel Palacio Cueto is set in a building that dates from the beginning of the 20th century, in the surroundings of the Plaza Vieja and in the heart of the historic center of Havana, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1982.
The building served as a warehouse, it was a hat factory and a pharmacy until the 1920s, when it was rented by José Cueto, to whom it owes its name, who turn it into the Hotel Palacio Viena.
Considered an architectural jewel, this unique property is perhaps the most representative of the Art Nouveau style in Havana, being the municipalities Habana Vieja and Centro Habana the ones that group the largest number of buildings of this style in the capital.
Its magnificent façade features striking sculpted stone work, eye-catching wave-shaped balconies, and elaborate ornamentation; Telamons (male figures) and caryatids (female figures) were used instead of columns and are projected above the arcade of the main entrance.
The Palacio Cueto features a strong influence of modernism. It is said that in Cuba, from the middle of the 19th century onwards, a desire for modernity arose, and around 1883 modern constructions began and art nouveau was assimilated as a rejection of the colonial style.
Instead, the one that prevailed was the art deco because of its simplicity as compare to the art nouveau.
As a result of a long restoration project of the Office of the City Historian, in 2019 this hotel reopened in the southeast corner of Plaza Vieja, as a luxury hotel with services and designs that complement modernity with the values of the unique architecture of the building.
It features 57 rooms, standard and mini suites, all elegant and well equipped.
One of the main attractions of this hotel is its rooftop terrace and bar, where in addition to enjoying a drink and a very pleasant atmosphere, the sunsets and nights are wonderful.
Its location is unbeatable for walking around Havana, close to all the places of interest in the historic center. This hotel is considered by many to be among the most beautiful and spectacular in Old Havana.
