Designed in the latter decades of the XVI century with the objective of protecting the Villa of San Cristóbal de La Habana, and in the company of its famous lighthouse, this fort is a symbol of the city of Havana.

The visitor is able, for just a small fee, to ascend the lighthouse where one can soak up impressive views of the city and its bay.

The construction of the castle was initiated in 1589 in tandem with that of the Castle of San Salvador de La Punta. Due to financial problems and disagreements between the governors and its architect, Bautista Antonelli, its completion was delayed until the XVII century. Despite the fierce defense put up by the residents of Havana there was no stopping the fortress from being taken over during England’s attack on the city in 1786.

One can still observe the breach in its fortified walls made by dint of cannon fire by the aggressors during “the Seizure of Havana”.

It is currently devoted to exhibiting relics from the colonial past of the island.
