Hotel Playa Larga´s best feature is no doubt its location -at the homonymous beach, one of the two main beaches of la BahÃa de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) together with Playa Girón-, and all the activities that come with it: birdwatching, hikes, trekking, fishing, diving…
The hotel is a basic 2* made up of little houses / bungalows of 1 or 2 rooms (68 rooms in total) that are spread around the property and surrounded by well kept, always green gardens. The rooms are all air conditioned, pretty spacious and clean although very simple and pretty dated.
Food is nothing to write home about either though adequate and one could always consider going to a nearby private restaurant for a richer culinary experience.
Now, the reasons one would choose this place are not accomodation or cuisine but:
- Wildlife is profuse and there are some rare endemic species like the manatee and the manjuarÃ, both endangered species.
- The pathways in the nearby zone are amongst the most renowned bird watching areas in Cuba, and Playa Larga International Bird Watching Center is the most important of its kind in the island, featuring specialized guides to serve the bird watchers.
- Playa Larga is also specially suitable for underwater activities such as snorkeling, day and night scuba diving and, for experts, diving in 70 m deep natural underground reservoirs. La BahÃa de Cochinos offers some of the best cave diving in the Caribbean since a dramatic drop in the seabed has created a huge wall, covered in sponges, gorgonians and coral.
- Fishing trips are very good value for money and fish are abundant.
