A visit to this memorial park makes for a genuine encounter with Cuban and universal history. Inaugurated on April 22, 1868, it was the third to be founded in the country, preceded only by the Havana cemeteries Espada and Colón, and within it, tribute is paid to a host of important martyrs of the independence struggles in the country of the last 150 years..
But regardless of the historical and cultural values the necropolis of Santiago may possess, it would definitely be attractive to the visitor to take pleasure in the tranquil contemplation of the many artistic values of its funerary art.
One sepulchre particularly stands out above all others: the Mausoleum to the Cuban National Hero José Martí where the mortal remains of the Cuban patriot are watched over with all the corresponding martial ceremony.
