Founded on the now distant year 1885, it is together with the theaters Sauto in Matanzas and the Terry of Cienfuegos one of the 3 surviving edifices hailing back to the golden age of Cuban theater constructions. Due to its countless artistic and patrimonial values it was declared National Monument in 1981. It constitutes the city’s foremost architectonic jewel.

Its origins are owed to the interest of Marta Abreu, matriarch of one of the wealthiest families of the center of the island, in endowing the city with a grand theater to assist in enriching the cultural life of the town’s settlers.

It got its name from the fact that the 8th of September, which is the exact day of its founding, is reserved in the island of Cuba for celebrations in honor of the Virgin of La Caridad del Cobre, the religious patroness of the island.
