This monument was erected on the outskirts of the city of Santa Clara, on the spot where an armored train carrying war supplies and munitions to the military forces engaged in combat against the guerrillas lead by Fidel Castro in the eastern part of the country was derailed. Che Guevara and his men halted the train’s advance and the event resulted in the Fulgencio Batista’s demission and his fleeing the country with the consequent fall of the régime and victory to the Cuban Revolution in 1959.
The site was conceived by the sculptor José Delarra and among its most outstanding elements one finds four of the original wagons, the excavator used to lift the railroad line and a plated car.
