Finally erected in 1892 after a haphazard constructive phase that extended for 75 years. It constitutes one of the largest catholic temples in the island and is one of the sites generally most appreciated by visitors to the historic town for the numerous attractive features to be found both on its exteriors as well as in its ornate interiors.
The site was chosen from the start to lodge the principal religious premises of the town dating back to the early founding days of Trinidad, but the precarious construction quality of the first facilities hampered its endurance over time.
