Located in the vicinities of park Ignacio Agramonte, this church is consecrated to the cult of the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the town of Camagüey.

The site was always linked to religious affairs seeing as there was an ecclesiastical establishment on the premises since 1617.

It was declared Holy Cathedral Church on the 10th of December 1912 by Pope Pius X, at which time the Diocese of Camagüey was constituted.
