The Fortress of San Carlos de La Cabaña took its name in honor of king Carlos III. Construction on this fort was initiated in 1763 under the supervision of the military engineer Silvestre Abarca. With its 10 hectares extension and its wall of over 700 meters, it became the largest such structure in Cuba and in all of America.

Regardless of its importance in the history of the island, of its values in relation to universal military architecture and the mark it can leave in the education of new generations by the museum wealth it treasures, the visitor must also learn of its role as the principal protagonist in maintaining one of the ancient traditions most beloved to the city’s inhabitants: The nine o'clock cannon shot.

For more than two centuries, night after night, from its emblematic ceremonial battery, it has released the thunder from one of its cannons to indicate to all inhabitants of Havana the arrival of the ninth hour in the evening.
