Located in the Castle of San Pedro de La Roca, the lighthouse constitutes an indubitable attraction for visitors to the fortress itself, given how rarely one gets to inspect the complicated framework of lenses that enable this type of structure to perform the tasks it was meant for: to give warning to ships at sea of their proximity to the coast and to serve as a beacon guiding all ships plying the nearby waters. The tower that the lighthouse is perched on, stands at a height of 18 meters and was raised in 1848; it has been repaired and refurbished on several occasions throughout the course of time. In its interior one can examine graphic information detailing its reconstruction at the dawn of the past century, after the tower was destroyed in the battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-North American war in 1898.
