It is located in a building of great traditional Trinitarian architectural beauty belonging to the 18th century, also known as the Casa Padrón where Hernán Cortés lived before leaving to conquer Mexico, in the heart of the historic center of the city, next to the Plaza Mayor.
The museum shows, in 8 rooms, the findings and archaeological works made in the 70s and opened its doors in 1976 with the aim of exhibiting the stage of prehistoric Cuba, from pre-Columbian times to the conquest of the south-central part of the Island of Cuba such as human skeletal remains, utensils, shackles of slaves, tools and illustrations.
It also offers guided visits, talks, conferences along with other cultural activities.
