Built in 1516, it was one of the first churches founded in the country, shortly after the town of Bayamo was founded and has withstood multiple historical events perpetrated in the city, especially the fire of 1869 which destroyed the main nave and the main chapel, while the Chapel of Our Lady remained intact.
The current building is a colonial-style religious construction, consisting of a nave and three-section bell tower, topped by a dome. Next to it is the cozy Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1720, with a beautiful baroque gold-laminated altar and a precious cedar wood ceiling, which follows a Mudejar style.
Currently it is the parish church of the town and the episcopal seat of the Diocese of the Santísimo Salvador de Bayamo-Manzanillo and every year the Procession of the Virgen de los Dolores begins its journey from this place.
